MasterCard International in Harrison, New York, United States is the global headquarters of the greatest American multinational corporation MasterCard Worldwide (NYE: MA).
The history of payments network is an old one, but the MasterCard history was born in 1966. It all started with a group of banks coming together to form the member-owned association, to be called MasterCard later. In a span of three years the company made its presence felt in Mexico, Japan and Europe soon to become a global presence. Today MasterCard is the undisputed leader in global payments network. The 1980s saw the emergence of the electronic payment advantages spreading around the globe and reaching out to remote regions and markets. People’s Republic of China’s first payment card was a MasterCard, soon followed by the Maestro the world’s first truly global online debit program launch in collaboration with Europe International. Until 2006 MasterCard Worldwide went into a publicly traded company was better known as Master Charge. MasterCard was an apt answer to the Bank of America’s BankAmericard-a similar service provide later evolved into the Visa Credit Card issued by Visa Inc. The Master Charge evolved from the original banks United California Bank (merged with First interstate Bank and later Wells Fargo Bank), Wells Fargo, Crocker National Bank (merged with Wells Fargo) and the Bank of California (merged with Union Bank of California).
The transit from MasterCard International to MasterCard Worldwide widened its global presence and extended its operations to greater scales. The new name had a new corporate logo as well- an additional circle to the two existing circles (Venn diagram look a like) the tagline followed: “The heart of commerce”. The advertising campaign hammered the message strongly” Priceless” added a perceived value to it, the slogan drove the point further “There are some things money can’t buy. For everything else there is a MasterCard.” The campaign boosted both the credit and debit card products, also the other products like travel card “priceless travel” etc. In the last 40 years the electronic payment industry has revolutionized the art and science of paying, goods and services. It has greatly influenced economic growth, transcended borders, dispensing benefits at every nook and corner of the world.
The MasterCard Worldwide brought about a newer dimension to the payments, innovation made commerce easier and faster safe and secure. The company strategies were customer driven and hence stood out as a franchisor, advisor and processor- built on the already established role of a franchisor. It brought about more transparency in governance followed by public offering in 2006.
